The European project AMALTEA (under the Horizon Europe Framework programme) is set to revolutionize the construction sector by integrating artificial intelligence (AI), robotics, and digitalization into the design, manufacturing, installation, and disassembly of modular facades. This initiative aligns with the Green Deal principles, aiming to enhance efficiency, minimize waste, and improve safety in the industry while promoting the reuse of materials and embracing a circular economy approach.
Led by a consortium of 15 partners from 9 European countries, AMALTEA will develop a fully automated and sustainable facade system, where modular facades are designed using AI-driven parametric tools, manufactured with robotic precision, and installed with advanced automation technologies. The project also focuses on sustainable disassembly strategies, ensuring that facade materials can be efficiently reused or recycled, significantly reducing the environmental impact of the construction sector.
One of the major challenges in today’s construction industry is the inefficiency of traditional methods, which rely heavily on manual labour, leading to high costs, installation errors, and excessive material waste. AMALTEA tackles this issue by introducing AI-powered design optimization, automated robotic assembly, and intelligent material recycling solutions, setting new standards for cost-effective and eco-friendly construction.
With a duration of 48 months (2025-2028), AMALTEA will have a direct impact across Europe, benefiting industries such as architecture, engineering, and construction. The project will also provide €4 million in financial support to innovative SMEs and startups, fostering new technologies that further accelerate the transformation of the construction sector.
This initiative stands out from existing solutions due to its comprehensive integration of AI, digital twins, and automation, ensuring seamless collaboration between human workers and robots. The expected benefits include:
- 20-50% reduction in system development calculation time
- 15% decrease in manufacturing and installation times
- 30% increase in recyclable materials usage
- Implementation of a welding process supervision and control system ensuring <1% defect rate
- 100% conformity between measured geometry and the digital model
- 30% reduction in installation process working time
- Improved safety conditions by reducing high-risk manual tasks
AMALTEA is paving the way for a greener, smarter, and more efficient construction industry, demonstrating how technology can drive sustainability and productivity. The project is supported by key players such as TECNALIA, LORTEK, Universidad de Stuttgart, Universidad Politécnica de Madrid, Siemens, Acciona, Züblin, Nlink, Teknopar, Facade Design & Building, ENAR Envolventes Arquitectónicas, FundingBox Accelerator, Digital for Planet and Fast Track. Stay tuned as AMALTEA reshapes the future of facade construction in Europe!
